How One Simple Question Can Change Everything

Ever wondered what doors you could open by just asking?

Victoria Park Community Park – Painted by Rich C Studio

It started with a coffee. One Saturday morning at Victoria Park Community Café, freshly renovated but missing one thing — a sign that could really tell people what this place is all about.

As I stood there, something nudged me: “Why not suggest it?” So, I did.

To my surprise, Caroline, the owner, didn’t just agree — she asked for two!

Now, I’m proud to say they’re hanging up, marking not just a café, but a hub of community life. Movie nights, board games, local meetups — this café is where connections happen. Just like the signs, it brings people together.

This project started like most do: with my sketchbook. I drew out a few concepts, explored colour schemes, and worked through different layout ideas with Caroline. The two signs had to be different sizes — thanks to an awkward outside tap — so each design needed to be flexible to fit its space perfectly.

Once the designs were signed off, I got to work. For the first time, I built the frames myself — something I now offer to all my clients. Building the frames really finishes the signs off nicely, adding that extra bit of craftsmanship and personal touch. With the frames built and prepped, I undercoated and top-coated both signs, ready for the fun part — sign writing.

The final touch was a generous layer of varnish to make them fully weatherproof. Then, on a beautiful spring evening long after the cafe had closed, I installed the signs, looking to surprise Caroline when she opened the café the next morning. Seeing her reaction when I walked past later the next day was priceless.

But more than completing the project, the experience taught me something valuable:

  1. If you see something that needs doing, speak up. You never know where it might lead.

  2. Asking isn’t as scary as we make it. Most of the time, the only thing stopping us is ourselves.

Victoria Park Community Café’s mission and my work align perfectly. We both strive to make our corner of the world a little brighter. Their café is a gathering spot, and my signs help tell that story. Together, we created something special — all because of one simple ask.

Next time you spot an opportunity, speak up. You never know what it might lead to.

Need a sign (or two) that tells your story? Let’s create it together. Reach out, and let’s see where a simple ask takes us.
